Story

Mallorca 312 is one of the most famous sportives cycling challenges in Europe. It’s held in one of the world’s most spectacular cycling mountainous destinations on totally closed roads. It’s also got a reputation for being one of the hardest amateur cycling events out there. The full 312 - kilometre (194 mile) route includes over 15,000 feet of climbing! Which is a big day out by anyone’s standards. The challenge is made all the harder with the addition of a time limit of just over 14 hours to complete the challenge. This year's race takes place on 27th April 2024. I've taken the plunge and in a crazy moment I've entered the 312. Having spent many cold and wet days riding the bike through the winter I'm as ready as I can be, and hopefully that'll be enough. I'm riding to raise some funds in support of Bowel Cancer UK, and in memory of my loving sister in law Lucy "Cinders" Nelson-Yeats. Cinders sadly lost her life to this awful disease as did both my father and mother. Andrew's (my brother-in-law, and Cinder's partner) drive to increase awareness of the early symptoms of the disease through his extensive fundraising is inspiring, and I'm supporting him in his quest as part of #adventurecheck. Please make yourself aware of the symptoms of bowel cancer and arm yourself with knowledge which could save your life or that of a loved one. Finally, if you're able to, please add your support to the fundraising. Bowel Cancer UK is the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity and campaigner for early diagnosis and awareness raising of the key early symptoms to look out for, to hopefully avoid acceleration of the disease to a critical stage, which was very close to Cinders' heart. Bowel Cancer UK is here to stop loved ones like Cinders and Mike's mum and dad from dying of bowel cancer. Mikes Mallorca 312 Course Completed in 13hrs 25 mins and 54 seconds 😀

17th May 2024
Mallorca 312 Course Completed in 13hrs 25 mins and 54 seconds 😀 With a ten mile ride to get to the start in Alcudia we left our hotel at 4:30 to make sure we got there in plenty of time, and avoid being too far behind the start line. Eight thousand riders take a while to get going, and the cut off time is based on when the first rider starts. The weather was great on the day, if a bit windy on the top of the climbs, and the general organisation with food and drink stops was very good. The lowest points of the day were when I almost missed getting through the first time cut off, but a bit of cunning meant I was able to carry on. I was however up against the clock, and needed to press ahead, and the plan to take it easy had to go. A couple of hours later came the next low. I thought I'd taken a wrong turn down one of the shorter routes, and it took the best part of an hour for me to realise I was still on the right course. Miraculously the legs were once again flying. Just another forty miles to go "the home straight" I thought. With fifteen miles left the race pulls into the town of Arta. They know how to put on a party in Arta and really embrace the race, treating competitors to free beer to speed us all along. It would have been rude to have passed up their hospitality, so a quick one it was while the partygoers danced and sang the day away. Everyone seemed to be lifted by Arta and we flew into Alcudia and the race finish. The mission was accomplished, and all the winter and spring riding around beautiful North Wales had paid off. A couple of celebratory beers after the ride, and a few days rest were the order of the days following 😀🍻 There were highs and lows along the way, but the moment of crossing the line within the cut off time is the memory I most want to hold onto. Thank you for all the support 🤍💙❤️ Mike

Mike has been training hard all winter to be ready for the 312 cycling Challenge

24th April 2024
Mike has been training hard all winter cycling up 100 miles in a day with up to 7,000 feet of up hill climbing through the hills of North Wales. It's amazing to think that's only about half of what he will have to do on the Mallorca 312 challenge, within a time limit of 14 hours Mike also kindly joined Andrew, Abi and Chris for a few cycling days out on their recent LeJog cycle challenge, and proved him self as a great positive motivating force and became our bike tech wizard fixing punctures, cleaning chains and washing down the bikes with lots of humour and energy when we where all a bit knackered from a long day on the saddle.
